Under the general supervision of the Science, Engineering and Mathematics Dean, the engineering instructor will be responsible for teaching a variety of transfer-level and introductory Engineering courses. The engineering instructor will assist in the development and teaching courses in the engineering and engineering tech programs. The instructor may be expected to work in a classroom incorporating computer activities, as well as one with a traditional instructional format. The instructor participates as a full-time faculty member in department and campus-wide activities. The instructor may be required to have his/her teaching assignment in the evening and/or weekend and teach courses at the Fremont and/or Newark campuses, and/or an off-campus location including Distance Education.

Desirable Qualifications


1. Master's degree in Engineering.
2. Teaching experience in engineering at the post-secondary level is “highly” desirable.
3. Two year teaching AND two years professional experience in Engineering field.
4. Professional Engineer's License.
5. Strong laboratory experience or experience in developing laboratory experiments for students. 6. Experience with a broad spectrum of instrumentation typically used in laboratory and field courses in Engineering.
7. Experience teaching with computer assisted instruction, Internet and distance learning.
8. Excellent communication skills. Must be able to communicate effectively with students and colleagues.
9. Experience in working with culturally diverse student populations (teaching or other situations in a leadership role).
10. Experience with new innovative teaching methods/programs that encourage student engagement and learning.
11. Familiarity with business industry and the private sector of the labor market.
12. Interest in, or experience with, coordinating student groups—such as student clubs, peer tutors, etc.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Teach assigned courses in Engineering such as Introduction to Engineering, Engineering Mechanics-Statics, Materials Engineering, Electric Circuit Analysis, etc. at the post-secondary level.
2. Develop and implement new programs that encourage a broad spectrum of students to pursue Engineering as a transfer major—such as Women in Science & Technology, etc.
3. Provide leadership in working with other disciplines and networking with industry.
4. Evaluate student work using clear criteria relevant to the course content and student learning outcomes and provide feedback to students in a timely manner.
5. Assist students by serving as student committee advisor, holding office hours, and advising students in their assignments.
6. Participate in activities and serve on committees for both departmental and campus-wide concerns, as required.
7. Attend and participate in Division and Department Meetings
8. Participate in the development, implementation, evaluation, and revision of curriculum.
9. Continue in related professional career development throughout employment and remain current in the field through course work, conferences, workshops and other appropriate means. 10. Serve as a coordinator and mentor for Bridge Programs with local universities, high schools and industry.
11. Organize and participate in the Engineering Advisory Committee.
12. Develop and implement a variety of effective teaching and assessment methods including the use of computers and information technology to engage student interest and support for a variety of learning styles.
13. Participate in the assessment of student learning outcomes at the course and program levels. 14. Maintain and submit accurate records according to published deadlines (i.e., grades, syllabi, attendance reports).
15. Develop curriculum and contribute to the department program review processes.
16. Carry out collegial responsibilities including, but not limited to, institutional committee assignments, student recruitment and retention, and participation in shared governance and campus life activities.
17. Communicate and work cooperatively with colleagues (within discipline and college-wide) on matters regarding course offerings, programs, and activities that would enhance the development of the department and college.
18. Perform duties described in Board policy, the Faculty Handbook, the UFO (faculty bargaining unit) Contract, and as assigned at the Fremont and Newark campuses, and/or other designated locations.
19. Engage in activities that enhance the department's rapport with area high schools, industry partners, and/or four-year institutions.
20. Develop effective online course materials, and build online learning communities that meet accessible online course requirements and Title 5 55211 Effective Contact Policy requirements. 21. Participate in the leadership of discipline specific learning communities.
22. Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Master's degree in any field of engineering OR
Bachelor's degree in any of the above AND master's degree in mathematics, physics, computer science, chemistry, or geology
the equivalent.
(NOTE: A bachelor's degree in any field of engineering with a professional engineer's license is an alternative qualification for this discipline


2. Commitment to community college goals/objectives of providing quality programs and services for culturally, socio-economically, ethnically, and academically diverse students and students with disabilities; personal qualities to work effectively and with sensitivity in a multicultural environment; awareness of and commitment to the needs of non-traditional and/or re-entry students with diverse abilities and interests.

    Medical: Enrollment in medical coverage through the district is optional. For those faculty that choose to enroll in one of the offered medical plans, the district currently provides an allowance of $1,000 per month to offset the cost of the medical benefits premium. The allowance will be increased to $1,200 per month effective January 1, 2018.

    *Enrollment in Dental, Vision and Life insurances are mandatory.

    Long-term Disability (LTD) and Employee Assistance Program (EAP): The district provides for and fully pays the premiums for long-term disability for you and EAP for you and your family.

    Sick Leave: One day per month, accumulating indefinitely, if unused. All other Education Code leave benefits apply.

    Sabbatical Leave: After 6 consecutive years of employment with the district you will be eligible for sabbatical leave. You will receive 100% pay for one semester leave and 70% for an academic year.

    Enrollment Fee Waiver: Employees and their qualified dependents receive enrollment fee waiver for courses taken at Ohlone College.
